The Plague Doctor

The Plague Doctor

Dark, bitterly cold alleys, eerie silence; in the distance, one hears the barking of a dog and the squeaking of an inn sign.
Somewhere from the windows of a dimly lit house, one hears agonizing coughing and gasping for air.
The scent of oils and incense pervades the streets, mingling with the pungent odor of corpses. The Black Death has Europe firmly in its bony grip during its successive waves of the plague. What is needed now are not heroes, but experts!
The Plague Doctor is a physician who learned a great deal about the plague and its containment in Milan. He also copied his equipment from the south, a Dr. Schnabel from Rome; it is the only effective protection that protects him in his treatments and examinations, so far.
But Lucerne holds up well, especially in 1628, and records no plague deaths. To ensure this remains the case, the plague doctor was summoned to Lucerne during the harsh, cold winter to ensure that everything was in order and intervene if necessary.
Keep pace with him and help him in his investigations, and with God's will, you too will defy the plague... or succumb, the plague doctor is always watching over you!

The Expert in an Interview

Do I have the plague?

If so, you wouldn't be able to ask me anymore.
Believe me!

What's your favorite tour?
I don't really have time to tour. My route takes me from south to north. From west to east. Always searching for answers on how we can get this under control. But I'd definitely visit my colleague the medicus again. And the executioner! I need new... new reagents for my... research!

Why are you only traveling in winter?
I'd like to tell you, it's because it's too hot in this valley in the summer. But mainly because I don't travel much then due to transportation constraints and snowy roads and passes. And I have to maintain order in the city should the Black Death resurface.

What do you recommend if you contract the disease?
Immediately burn all the clothes you were wearing. Fumigate your dwelling. Go to the nearest hospice or leave the city so the disease doesn't spread. I can give you some palliatives, but I can't promise a cure. Pray!

Were rats really to blame for everything?

Yes and no. They carried the plague to the cities, but they weren't the only ones to blame for the misery! We humans are partly to blame; I fully support the theory from Milan. But I'm not yet sure whether the disease is spread by miasma or by crowds. I'm currently leaning toward the latter.
